Home Breast Cancer Detection
As with most cancers, early detection of breast cancer can save your life. That is why it is recommended to perform home breast exams on a regular basis to check for any abnormalities or signs that something might be amiss. Below are the steps to completing an at home breast exam.
Step 1: The first step in a home breast exam is to exam your breasts in the mirror with your shoulders straight and your hands positioned on your hips. You are looking for signs of swelling or distortion. Your breasts should appear their usual size, shape, and color. Schedule an examination with your doctor immediately if you notice any of the following:
- Redness, swelling, or a rash
- Soreness
- A nipple that has changed position
- A nipple that appears inverted
- Dimpling, bulging, or puckering of the skin of the breast
Step 2: Next, while examining yourself in the mirror, raise your arms above your head. Check for the same changes to the appearance of your breasts as outlined above. If you notice that the appearance of your breasts have changed, or if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, please alert your doctor.
Step 3: The third step in breast cancer detection is to closely exam your nipples. While looking in the mirror, check for signs of fluid coming out of one or both nipples. The fluid may appear as follows:
- Watery
- Milky
- Yellow in color
- Blood
Step 4: While lying down, use your hand to feel your breasts. Ideally, you should use your right hand to examine your left breast and your left hand to exam your right breast while the other arm is positioned above your head. Keep your fingers flat and tightly together and use the pads of your fingers to move in a circular motion, feeling the breast for any abnormalities. This works best using a firm but smooth touch. Be sure to cover the surface of the entire breast.
Step 5: The final step in home breast cancer screening is to follow step 4 while sitting or standing. In many cases, women tend to prefer to complete this step while in the shower. While holding one arm in the air, use the opposite had to exam the breast tissue.
While completing the exam, if you notice anything alarming or worrisome, please do not hesitate to contact a medical professional for further examination. Additionally, if you are over the age of 40, it is suggested to have a mammogram yearly to check for signs of breast cancer.
